A familial crisis in congenital acholuric jaundice.

چکیده
A familial crisis in congenital acholuric jaundice involving several members of a family within a short space of time is an unusual occurrence. Nine further instances are reported by Barber (1934), Scott (1935), Murray-Lyon (1935), Dedichen (1937), Dameshek (1941), Lyngar (1942), Home, Lederer, Kirkpatrick and Leys (1945), Owren (1948) and Marson, Meynell and Tarbush (1950). In the histories given below crises of varying severity are shown affecting five members of a family of seven. The family pedigree is illustrated in Fig. 1.

Atypical congenital haemolytic anaemia.
The most common type of congenital haemolytic anaemia found in Great Britain is familial haemolytic anaemia (chronic acholuric jaundice). A similar congenital haemolytic anaemia may be found on rare occasions in children in whom the red cells do not show spherocytosis, or increased osmotic fragility. The response to splenectomy is not very satisfactory and the syndrome does not fit into the est...

The diagnosis of haemolytic anaemia is made when circulating red blood cell (RBC) survival is shortened. Today, the laboratory findings in haemolytic anaemia and the distinction between inherited and acquired forms are studied by preclinical medical students the world over. Although haemolytic anaemia is much less common than anaemia as a result of marrow failure or bleeding, general physicians...

The lowered resistance to hypotonic saline of the red cells in acholuric jaundice has for long been known, but it is only since the advent of the PriceJones method of accurately measuring red cell diameters, and the introduction of the cell volume index that the unique shape of the red cells has been recognized. Of late the work of Vaughan' has added to the knowledge of the concentration of hae...
